What items can be stored in the storage unit?
The storage unit is a convenient place for keeping seasonal clothing and items, such as winter gear and children's sleds during summer, or sand toys during winter. Due to Finland’s changing seasons, most drivers own two sets of tires. A common question is where to store the spare set when it’s not in use. You may keep up to four car tires in your personal storage unit. This helps avoid tire hotel fees and allows for quick, easy tire changes with the seasons.
Please note that the storage areas are not under constant surveillance, and unfortunately, incidents of vandalism do occur. It is recommended not to store valuables. Also, avoid keeping documents that contain personal information—school and work certificates, for example, should be stored inside your home to prevent identity theft. Home insurance also covers items in the storage unit, so make sure your policy is up to date when moving. For YH Kotien residents, home insurance is mandatory.
What can be stored in the outdoor equipment storage room?
For fire safety reasons, you may not store items such as skis, strollers, or walkers in stairwells. These should be placed in the outdoor equipment storage. In addition to the above, these spaces are suitable for items like bicycles, sleds, and toboggans.
Outdoor equipment storage rooms are shared spaces. Please be mindful of others and arrange your items so they don’t cause tripping or other hazards.
Fire safety in storage
IMPORTANT: In your apartment, you may store up to 25 liters of flammable liquids like gasoline, and up to 25 kg of liquefied gas, as long as safety is not compromised. In a separate storage room within the residential building, you may store up to 50 liters of flammable liquids and up to 50 kg of gas. Storage containers should be placed so they are not exposed to heat sources like heaters or direct sunlight. Do not store any easily flammable or combustible items in the personal storage unit.
Tips for efficient storage
Make it a habit to check your storage unit regularly. Go through items you no longer need—you can sell, donate, or recycle them. Keep things organized so they’re easy to find.
Make use of vertical space with hooks, and store smaller items in transparent plastic containers—this makes it quick to spot where sand toys or holiday decorations are. Store clothing in garment bags to protect them from dust and to keep them clean and ready to move.
Arrange items by how frequently you need them: place often-used items near the entrance and rarely used things further back. This saves time and avoids having to reorganize each time you visit.
When organizing, keep safety in mind. Ensure that tools or sharp-edged objects don’t pose a risk to anyone using the space.
