Is it possible to live in the apartment during renovations?

Before the Renovation: Get Ready!

  1. Plan your living situation
    Do you have special needs that might make staying in a renovated apartment challenging? It's a good idea to consider this in advance and think about whether you need to make alternative arrangements.
  2. Keep up with the plans
    Be sure to attend info sessions and read all updates. Both YH Kodit and the contractor carrying out the renovation will send out important notices about the renovation plans.
  3. Move your belongings
    Residents are responsible for clearing out the areas to be renovated, following the contractor’s instructions. The contractor will handle protecting and isolating the area under renovation. In some cases, even the bike storage or storage unit may need to be emptied.
  4. Don't forget your pets
    Plan ahead to ensure your pet has a safe and calm place to stay during the renovation. Pets should be kept away from the construction area, as noise and unfamiliar people in the home can cause them stress.

During the Renovation: Living at Home

  1. Use temporary facilities
    While the renovation is underway, residents will have access to separate facilities for using the toilet, showering, and doing laundry. These spaces are equipped to match the original facilities as closely as possible.
  2. Prepare for surprises
    Although renovations are carefully planned, tearing down old structures may reveal the unexpected. Be ready for changes that couldn’t be predicted in advance.
  3. Stay alert for safety
    Keep your eyes open while moving around both inside and outside shared spaces. The renovation may temporarily affect walking routes and where you can store items.
  4. Find ways to stay active
    Since most construction work takes place during weekdays, plan fun or useful activities outside the home. Visit a neighbor for coffee or run some errands in town.
  5. Expect interruptions
    Water and electricity will occasionally need to be shut off. You’ll be notified about planned outages in advance, and they'll be kept as short as possible—but surprises can happen. Keep drinking water on hand. It's also a good idea to empty the freezer and prepare backup storage for medications that require refrigeration.
  6. Speak up—don’t grit your teeth
    Notice anything out of the ordinary or inconvenient? Contact the contractor immediately. For instance, if construction dust escapes into living areas or you spot another issue, the contractor is there to resolve it.
  7. Keep it clean
    The contractor is responsible for keeping the protected areas tidy, but it’s also wise to maintain cleanliness in the rest of your home. Small repair tasks might take place beyond the main renovation area.

After the Renovation: It’s Done!

  1. Test and explore
    As the resident, you’re the best judge of whether the renovation in your apartment has been completed properly. Everything should be in good order afterward. If you notice any issues, report them right away so the contractor can fix them.
  2. Patience pays off
    Even if your apartment is finished, the overall renovation in the building might still be ongoing. Contractors may still need to access your home for adjustments. Work in neighboring units can also cause noise and temporary disruptions to common areas and routes.
  3. Make use of the warranty inspections
    The contractor provides a 2-year warranty for renovations. During this period, we’ll send out a survey to gather resident feedback. Be sure to respond—whether it’s praise or complaints, we’re eager to hear it!
