Is smoking allowed in YH Kodit apartments?
Topic: Naapurin puolesta kyselen

The effects of smoking in residential buildings are wide-ranging, impacting not only individual health but also the overall living comfort.
Cigarette smoke indoors causes respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and other health hazards for non-smokers. Smoke easily drifts from one apartment to another, degrading the neighborhood’s air quality. Additionally, the smell of smoke can linger on furniture, textiles, and surfaces, lowering the value of the apartments and affecting residents’ quality of life. This can be especially problematic when new residents move in and must deal with the traces left behind by previous smokers.
Banning smoking in our rental apartments:
Our commitment to a smoke-free living environment began in 2013, when we decided to prohibit smoking in all our rental homes. This decision is rooted in our aim to protect residents' health and create a residential atmosphere that promotes well-being.
Smoke-free right-of-occupancy homes:
Since 2014, the smoking ban has also applied to our right-of-occupancy homes. This ensures that all our residents can enjoy a smoke-free environment that supports a healthier lifestyle.
We are in the process of applying for official smoke-free status for all our right-of-occupancy properties through local health authorities. Some properties have already been granted this designation.
Balcony and terrace smoking ban:
To further reduce the harmful effects of smoking, we introduced a smoking ban on balconies and terraces for all new agreements starting from autumn 2020. The goal is to minimize the spread of smoke and protect all residents from related health risks.
Exceptions and existing agreements:
Some residents may have signed agreements before the balcony and terrace ban took effect. In such cases, they retain the right to smoke in their own apartment—unless the property has been officially declared smoke-free. However, we encourage all residents to act responsibly and consider their neighbors when it comes to smoking.
Prioritizing community health:
In summary, promoting a smoke-free environment is a step toward a healthier, more sustainable, and cohesive living space. It brings a range of benefits that improve life for both individuals and the community as a whole. When all residents follow the smoke-free rules, it helps prevent conflicts and fosters a more positive atmosphere.
We kindly ask all residents to be mindful of their neighbors and to comply with our smoking policy. Please use only designated smoking areas. This way, everyone can enjoy clean air and a healthier home environment. Thank you for working with us to build a smoke-free community!
